Today we went to the Bahraini National Museum. Both Ali and I had a great time, even the kids enjoyed it, for the most part. A couple of things really caught me. One was in the exhibit about the burial mounds (which are all over the island, and as they sound are mounds under which people were buried): first, it seems the mounds were partially constructed when a person reached adulthood, then remained open until the person died, at which point they were buried. Another interesting point was during excavation archaeologists found skeletons where some had such severe fluorosis that some bones (like the spine, in the skeleton in the display) and cartilage had completely fused. We also saw stuff about the pearl divers, for which Bahrain was famous for, and was the main export before oil was found; and a lot of information about the cultural of Bahrain. As you can see from the photo, the kids were interested in pottery.

Kidisms of the day:
Elyas, at the museum told me he "wants 'minute' in the museum" and later said he wanted me to "take me potty in the museum" He's a cute little stinker.

I was reading the children a book about the history of the world, and there was a picture of ancient Roman Senate. Leila asked about it and I told her they were ancient philosophers, and she wanted to know what they were wearing and I told her they were togas. She said "then Baba needs a toga!" ... she ran off to tell him that, and then came back to me and said "he didn't understand me at first, but then when I told him three times he did, and he was so surprised he ran away and disappeared!" LOL!
