19/365

Thursdays are Leila's fiddle lesson days, and here she is at her teacher's studio playing. I wish I knew the secret to getting her to practice consistently. I guess I am just going to have to sit her down and make her. I don't really want to force it, but I also wish my mother had made me practice (and stick with) piano when I was young when it's easier to learn (no blame on you, Mom, I also wish that I was more motivated on my own!). It's a delicate balance to walk!

What a cool instrument to learn! :) I stuck with piano until I was 16, and asked to quit lessons, because I felt I knew it all! ;) I'm teaching our daughter now, so I guess it all paid off! :)

I had to be encouraged to practice...I was to practice every night while my parents made dinner (they liked to hear me play too). Maybe something similar would be good for Leila?

What I recommend to parents is that they ask their children to play a piece they are working on for them. Also, I do give studio prizes for completed assignment sheets, and the reminder of that can be helpful, or charting progress and giving some sort of prize can work until kids are old enough to really see the intrinsic value.

If there is a consistent time that she can practice (early in the morning, before dinner, something like that), it is easier to organize practicing.

Or, make it one of her expectations,as with chores, and mark it off on a chart when she completes it each day. Kids at that age respond well to visible indications of their success, and charts are great for that. You have probably already asked her if she would like you to sit with her while she practices, or if she would rather practice on her own.

Maybe she would play for grandma or Suzy or me on SKPE (hint, hint!)
