Not a well baby check, I took him in for his constipation issues. The doctor basically brushed me off saying it's not abnormal for babies this age to be constipated. I'll agree with him there to some extent, but I think I have right to be concerned. Elyas has been constipated pretty badly for about 3 months, coinciding with starting to eat grains, really (actually, I started him earlier, but stopped them when he had issues with them - broke out in eczema... started again and the constipation started up and the eczema returned about a month ago (it got better when we were in Hawaii). Anyway, so I am concerned he has some grain allergies, and in the pit of my stomach I fear Celiac. I don't have Munchausen by proxy, I don't WANT him to have celiac, but I do fear it and some part of me has a feeling that that is what's going on. Anyway, the doc didn't seem all the up on the research... I mentioned I thought it was grains (not mentioning celiac), and he told me gluten intolerance causes diarrhea not constipation (wrong - according to the celiac disease foundation!). Said that eczema may or may not be allergy related (not sure I buy that one either). Basically told me to give him pear or apple juice, brown sugar or molasses, glycerin suppositories (which he said weren't habit forming), and to call if I wanted to put him on miralax (a pediatric formulated fiber supplement). so no real answers. Oh, when we discussed vax (since it was inevitable it'd come up) he said they don't get the vax with thimerisol, so I replied I have concerns about aluminum and formaldahyde and he looked at me like I had two heads and said he'd research that for me (um thanks, doc, I've got it covered).
Elyas was 20 lbs and 9 ounces, and either 30.5 or 31.5 inches (I can't remember!).

My daughter just got tested for Celiac disease, but since they did the blood test, it will probably come back negative. She has massive diarrhea from gluten containing products, but breaks out, head to toe, from eczema when she eats wheat or rye. It disappeared when we stopped feeding her gluten. Allergy anyone? She didn't have eczema at all until then.
Your doctor is not knowlegable about gluten intolerance. Constipation is most certainly typical with some people who are gluten intolerant. I am one of them and I know many others. With your child's eczema it is even more suspicious. Save yourself some grief and go to www.enterolab.com and order a stool antibody test for your baby. And remember, being gluten intolerant doesn't necessarily mean you will officially have celiac disease, but the bottom line is you still have to avoid all gluten.
we found a dr in issaquah that seems to be very up on lots of things--vaccines included. and the waiting rooms and examining rooms all have lots of toys and i can even keep tegan corralled and non-screamy! plus it is a "paperless" office and everyone walks around carrying dells! (fyi: Dell is in Austin! :) )
