Happy Mother's Day!

Sometimes it amazes me to think how much my life has changed in the last 5 years! 5 years ago at this time I was finishing up my final quarter of my undergraduate education, and suffering through baby fever that would soon be relieved with the arrival of Leila in my belly. :) I always, always knew I wanted to be a mother. Nothing in life makes me as happy as my two children. I am blessed, I know it.

Being a mother has given me greater appreciation for my own mother, all her hard work. Mom, Happy Mother's Day! You know I love you dearly, and I really am truly sorry for all the trouble I caused you when you already had enough on your plate. I'm glad we were able to move past that and have the wonderful relationship we have now! I miss you.

I had a really nice weekend, albeit busy (ah motherhood, when is life NOT busy?). Friday the kids and I did some prep on the garage for the chicken coop, hydralic cement in the floor cracks and painted on cement sealer/water proofer paint on the flooring. Then I painted a sign for my garden.

Saturday we (well, mostly me, with some wall raising assistance, and kid watching by Ali) made the walls for the chicken coop.

After the kids went to bed I made applesauce and apple butter, and 4 pints of strawberry rhubarb jam. And washed the kitchen floor.

Today Ali made us breakfast, then we went out and got to work on the coop. I made the door in the morning, then headed out while Elyas napped to get some door hardware and a staple gun to attach the hardware cloth. We finished it in the afternoon, with the exception of the laying boxes, which will be in that space to the left of the door in the pic above, with a little hatch to retrieve eggs from without going in. It's purposefully at Leila's height. You can guess who has the job of egg collector!

The chickens are out there now, for their first night out of the house! Phew! Now who is going to clean my basement kitchen, where they've been staying? (and making QUITE a mess). It was hilarious watching them trying to figure out how to get up the the perch. I only saw Rosie actually get up there and stay (most of them were over shooting it, or getting too much momentum and going right over). I bet they'll all be up there tomorrow when I go in!

Oh, Elyas learned to swing on the "big boy swing"... but I wouldn't trust him to hold on...

Mom, he's ready to go to Hawaii with you! Look, his curls are growing back in!

Yes, you put me through some rough times. All children do at some time or another. If you love them and are a grown-up, you know you will get through it while they stretch their wings. I am so very proud of you, and I love you.

I am so jealous of the life you are living! Two darling children, a great husband who is fun and interesting, and time to make your nest and garden, and cook, and paint, and build things!

What a lovely way to live, Sarah!

I miss you, though, and those darling, darling, children!

We must Skpe soon!

Love,

Nanny

Wow Sarah, you are one busy mama, I am amazed and inspired by all that you accomplish! Love the Victory sign. I have my first raised bed this year (my very belated 2008 mother's day gift from Lonny) and my chard and butter lettuce are doing well. Lots of fun. Leila and Elyas are growing so fast! A big hello from all of us here in the Bastien house :)
